In general, roundabouts take about two to two-and-a-half times as much space across as traffic light installations–and many more downed trees.
The intersection at Greenville Highway and Erkwood Drive will be closed over the next two weekends as crews with the state Department of Transportation prepare the intersection for a 90-day project this spring to realign the intersection and replace it with a roundabout.
David Uchiyama with NCDOT said the intersection will be closed for 36-hour periods this weekend, Feb. 22-24, and next weekend, March 1-3, for 36-hour periods with marked detour.
The intersection will be back open both weekends in time for church on Sunday morning, he said.
Work over the next two weekends will prepare the intersection for the construction of a roundabout, a project set to begin this spring, though the exact date is still yet to be determined, he said. Once that work starts, roads in the immediate area will remain closed for the 90-day duration of the roundabout construction.
